"I REALLY COME FROM FAR," SAYS MONA CHARLES, "BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT I HAD BIG DREAMS, AND MUSIC WAS ONE OF THEM. MUSIC HAS HEALED MY WOUNDED SOUL, GAVE MY LIFE A DEEPER PURPOSE, AND MY GREATEST WISH IS THAT IT BRINGS OTHERS THE GREATEST WELL-BEING POSSIBLE."
Born in Haiti and emigrating to Quebec at the age of eight, everything in her life, without a doubt, has contributed to shaping her repertoire. But it would be more fitting to return to her early childhood, a time that was sometimes difficult, when she chose to bake in the sun as a way to get back at her mother for the inevitable and seemingly harmless punishments. In those moments, she would cry or wail her pain, sometimes singing it with the energy of a little tigress, unknowingly paving the way for a glorious future. Without question, music has always been part of her soul, for every small childhood disappointment became the perfect opportunity to indulge in a melody that never seemed to end. Then one day, she was told that she was a born artist and would be allowed to teach singing. Of course, the prophetic oracle excused itself but took her by the hand that day and led her into a recording studio. So it was! And from that moment, her first album was born: "VIN KOTEM" [Come to Me]. After that, a sea of people, as if by magic, began to approach her. From then on, the melodious and vibrant lark would regularly set the rhythm on every rooftop.
To tell the truth, the songs of this singer-songwriter, a blend of gospel, soul, blues, Kompa, and Afrobeat, are deeply influenced by her daily or intimate life experiences! Proof of this is her single, aptly titled "COURAGE", which reaches out with open arms, ready to embrace all souls in distress, and ultimately breathe into them the optimism needed to hold on to the beautiful and amazing things in life.
Her third single, titled " LAKAY" (My Home or My Country), resonates like a cry from the heart, a melody filled with poignant urgency. Through vibrant notes, it calls on her compatriots to embrace change, to rise together like a rising tide. It reminds them that it is time to weave the dreams of our nation, to raise builders of the future for this generation and those to come, instilling the conviction that today's actions will shape tomorrow's landscape.
That said, just before dawn, very early in the morning, gently open your doors and windows, and if by chance you hear the melody of a song coming to lull you, you will know that this "powerful, warm, coppery, but especially honeyed voice" is merely preceding the lark, much like the great thinkers who served as her models, including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Kassav, Lara Fabian, Tina Turner, Cece Winans, Emeline Michel, and many other artists.
